Stronghold is a historic real-time strategy game developed by Firefly Studios in 2001. The game spawned several sequels: Stronghold: Crusader (2002), Stronghold 2. Stronghold 3 (2011), Stronghold Kingdoms (2012) and Stronghold Crusader II. 3.6 Stronghold 3; 3.7 Stronghold Crusader II; 3.8 Stronghold: Warlords.

Stronghold Next for PC is a real-time economic strategy taking place during medieval times. The game was developed by FireFly, the authors of all previous installments of the series.

Plot

Stronghold Next takes us to medieval times, and gives us a fief to care for and control. We begin with a poor village and a small castle, while our objective is to use these meager means to build a powerful country.

Mechanics

The game doesn’t deviate from the genre standards, and the gameplay mechanisms were left without major changes. As always, the gameplay focuses on building and expanding new settlements, building bigger and bigger fortresses, and laying sieges to other lords’ dominions. The game mainly focuses on economic and constructions aspects. Castles can be designed at will and constructed from a number of ready-made elements.

Village management also gives us a number of options. We can construct houses, sawmills, markets, farms, etc. i.e. structures that will give our subjects work, food, and money. Of course, the battles are still here – a large emphasis was placed on various siege techniques.

Game Modes

Stronghold Next offers a singleplayer campaign, single historic missions and a sandbox mode, allowing the player to build castles without being constricted with any objectives. Aside from that, authors prepared a multiplayer mode.

The back-story of game told the campaign that king was captured and held in jail of castle. There control of land is in hands of four lords, they have divided the land territories.

The player is young, in experiment commander, whose father is killed in an ambush of villains. He get help from two lords who were loyal to king. Now the player has to take control on the whole land by power fear rival lord’s countries one by one. The player will defeat each lord one by one in the campaign, also receiving help from the king once he has been successfully ransomed mid-game. An economic campaign will set after the main campaign in done. This is where player re constructs parts of kingdom. The player is set goals to complete against a variety of obstacles like fire and bandits.

Other Games modes are single player combat and economic strategy based. There player has to control and complete the army and economic goals both. A Siege mode is included in the game, in which the player has to attack or defend several historical castles. Another game mode is free build. Here the player can build castle without any objectives. Player can rebuild the map using map editor.
