Players will also have access to a Syrian map during the prologue and then, once again once they have finished the game.

Rise of the Tomb Raider follows up on Crystal Dymanics' redefining prequel/reboot to the Lara Croft saga. In Rise of the Tomb Raider, Lara becomes more than a survivor as she embarks on her first great Tomb Raiding expedition. Experience high-octane action moments, conquer beautifully hostile environments, engage in brutal guerilla combat. Welcome to our Rise of the Tomb Raider complete walkthrough guide. This guide will provide you with a walkthrough that will take you through the game from beginning to end helping with strategies.

On the world map, areas of interest in terms of gameplay are marked with icons that reflect the type of task associated with them. These include: Diamond-shaped objective markers, green pulses indicating optional side-mission objectives, cave entrances, Challenge Tombs, the Soviet Installation Supply Shack and collectibles of every variety.

The collectible locations will appear on the world map once you have either discovered or spotted them during Lara’s travels, or by finding and picking up Archivist’s Maps and Explorer’s Satchels or deciphering Monoliths. Collectible icons include the following: Codices, Coin Caches, Documents, Monoliths, Murals, Relics, Strongboxes and Survival Caches.

Waypoints

During missions, with Lara’s Survival Instinct active you'll receive objective markers that act as waypoints showing you exactly where you need to go to continue. These will also occur on the world map. From the world map screen you can also set your own custom waypoint which will appear in Survival Instinct regular gameplay. You can then follow said waypoint to any destination of your choice.

Perhaps the most useful element of this ability is that it is possible to highlight a collectible location with a custom waypoint. Using this waypoint in conjunction with Survival Instinct will lead you directly to said collectible. This is especially useful when hunting down those last few, hard to find collectibles that are not in straightforward locations.

Base Camps and Fast Travel

As with the previous Tomb Raider reboot, discovering a Base Camp will give Lara the opportunity to rest, upgrade her gear, craft new items and invest any unspent XP Skill points into Skill trees. Once discovered, you will then be able to use it as a fast travel point. As you might suspect, using fast travel will allow you to instantly select and travel to any previously discovered Base Camp on the world map. This ability is very handy for returning to previous areas in pursuit of side-missions or collectibles and significantly cuts your travel time when used as a shortcut.

Stealth

As with Tomb Raider (2013) getting into a fire fight is not always the best option, in fact being sneaky in Rise of the Tomb Raider will make many of the enemy encounters much, much easier as well as providing bonus XP in most instances. In Rise of the Tomb Raider, Lara has a number of useful ways to exploit the environment and some fancy abilities and gadgets she can use to move around, sneak up on, and distract or takedown enemies.

Stealth Abilities

Sneaking – Whilst undetected, but in range of enemies Lara will drop down into a sneaking mode in which she moves around in a crouched walk. This makes Lara that much more difficult to spot, enables her to hide behind cover, reduces the noise her footsteps make and subsequently draws much less attention.

Hiding – Whilst avoiding enemies, Lara can hide from view in a number of ways. The most frequent of these is the introduction of low-lying vegetation and shrubs in which Lara can crouch unnoticed or whilst hiding behind low crates or walls whilst taking cover. When inside a hiding spot, Lara is essentially invisible making them a great place to observe enemy patrol patterns and plan your next move. It is also possible to use instant kill silent takedown attacks on unaware enemies if they venture too close.

Distractions – As you might imagine, distractions are a great way to draw enemies' attention away from your current location – perfect for sneaking up behind them for a silent takedown attack or to stealth your way past them unnoticed. Omae wa mou shindeiru nani meme. Mighty switch force 2 gynoid. Lara pick up and throw bottles, jars and cans in the environment to create effective noise distractions. It is also possible to leave bodies of enemies in the open or shoot silent weapons such as arrows close to enemies to have them leave their regular patrol patterns to investigate.

Silent Takedowns

When Lara is undetected and in the presence of enemies, it is possible to sneak up on and kill enemies instantaneously with a range of environmentally contextual silent takedown attacks.

many of these attacks require the initial approach attack and several more button prompts to finish the enemy off. The ‘Deadly Force’ and ‘Death From Above’ Skills in the Survivor Skill Tree will make these attacks instant K.Os.

These silent takedown attacks can include the following:

  • Takedown – Simply walking up to a guard undetected and hitting the melee button as the button prompt appears above a target’s head will kill him.
  • Death from Above - Climbing up to a roof, tree branch, ledge or any other raised structure that we can stand on, we can look down and target enemies below us. Hitting the button prompt when it appears above an enemy’s head will result in the Lara jumping from the building and knocking the enemy down. Learning the ‘Death from Above’ skill in the Survivor skill tree will make it an instant kill.
  • Shrub/Bush Takedown – It is possible to perform a silent takedown on an enemy from the low lying vegetation that Lara can utilise as a hiding place if they move into close proximity to her. In addition to killing the target, this form of takedown will also hide the body in the same action.
  • Water Takedown – There are several points in the campaign where Lara is able to approach enemies from the water. If an enemy is close enough to the ledge overlooking her position, she can grab them and pull them into the water to drown them.
  • Corner Takedown – Whilst in cover behind objects such as walls, fences and crates, it is possible to initiate a stealthy takedown if a soldier moves too close to Lara’s location.

Combat

Unfortunately, no matter how stealthy Lara is, combat is inevitable in Rise of the Tomb Raider. For the most part, it takes the form of your standard cover-based third-person shooter and Lara has numerous weapons with which to take on enemies. They include:

Pickaxe – The Pickaxe is Lara’s standard melee weapon. It can be upgraded to increase the damage it causes and to be able to remove/destroy enemy armour.

Bow – The Bow is the first weapon Lara will pick up and is also by far the most useful. Not only is the bow silent, with the right Skills unlocked, you can recover your arrows from downed enemies, increase your draw time and hold it in position for longer to enable more easy accuracy. Perhaps its most useful function however is the specialty arrows it can use. They include:

  • Upgrade: Poison Arrows – These will release a cloud of green gas that will kill most enemies outright, although it may only stun tougher opponents and larger animals such as Bears and Leopards.
  • Upgrade: Fire Arrows – These arrows can light enemies on fire, causing damage over time. They can also be used to destroy doorways blocked with canvas/cloth barricades and can also destroy specific region challenge objects (Posters, banners etc.) that need to be burned.
  • Upgrade: Grenade Arrows – These arrows explode on impact causing splash damage to enemies around the impact point. These can also be used to destroy larger metal barricades.

Pistol – The Pistol is Lara’s starting firearm and there are several on offer before the end of the game. In general Pistols do good, short range damage and can kill most enemies with a simple headshot. Pistols, as with other firearms can be used to destroy wooden barricades.

  • Upgrade: Pistol Sights - can be obtained through completing the ‘Dangerous Territory’ optional side-mission and it will automatically be applied to all Pistols that you own/acquire.
  • Upgrade: Silencer – A Silencer for the Pistols can be purchased form the Supply Shack in the Soviet Installation for 25 Byzantine Coins.

Rifle – The Rifles are the second type of firearm that Lara will acquire in the game and they provide good medium to long range damage with a much quicker rate of fire (except for Bolt-Action Rifle!) than the other guns on offer. Rifles, as with other firearms can be used to destroy wooden barricades.

  • Upgrade: Suppressor – can be obtained through completing the ‘Gulag Recon’ optional side-mission and it will automatically be applied to all Rifles that you own/acquire.
  • Upgrade: Laser Sight – can be purchased form the Supply Shack in the Soviet Installation for 25 Byzantine Coins.
  • Upgrade: Grenade Launcher – can be purchased form the Supply Shack in the Soviet Installation for 120 Byzantine Coins.

Shotgun – The first Shotgun will be acquired around half way through the game and yep, you guessed it – the Shotgun is best used in close range with its wide spray doing a great deal of damage to enemies in close proximity. If used correctly, a single shot can even wound or kill multiple enemies at a time. Shotguns, as with other firearms can be used to destroy wooden barricades.

  • Upgrade: Spreader Choke – can be obtained through completing the ‘Misguided Intelligence’ optional side-mission and it will automatically be applied to all Shotguns that you own/acquire.

Grenades – Although Lara cannot store grenades on her person, she can craft them. After finding a can in the environment, it is possible with the right reagents to create a fragmentation grenade. Throwing these at enemies has the possibility of either killing them outright or knocking them down for a few seconds.

Molotov Cocktails – The Molotov Cocktails are found ¼ of the way through the game and like the grenades, they cannot be carried, only crafted. To make one, you’ll need to find a bottle in the environment and pick it up. Whilst holding the bottle, if Lara has sufficient reagents to do so, you can craft the projectile. Hitting enemies with a Molotov will have them catch on fire, this can spread to other enemies and affect multiple bad guys at once.

Smoke Bombs – Smoke Bombs, like the grenades and Molotovs, can be crafted with the right combination of reagents. These require you to find stone/pewter jars in the environment. Throwing these will create a cloud of smoke that will distract or confuse enemies, allowing you to move in and take them down stealthily or to sneak by them.

Gadgets

As you progress through the campaign, Lara will progressively unlock additional equipment that can be used to traverse the map in various ways.

Pick Axe – The Pick Axe is Lara’s starting weapon and in addition to its combat abilities it can also be used outside of enemy encounters in a number of ways. They include:

  • The Pickaxe can be used to manipulate winch mechanisms.
  • Whilst exploring the Pickaxe can also be utilised to break down weak segments of walls found in ruins or caves.
  • The Pickaxe is required to open the Lockbox collectibles.
  • The Pickaxe can also be used to farm reagents from the environment such as Magnesite Ore.

Lockpick – The Lockpick can be acquired by completing the first side-mission ‘Communications Breakdown’. It can be used to unlock locked doors and specific, locked Lockboxes.

Rope Arrows – Rope Arrows return from the previous game and perform essentially the same function. They have a pair of abilities which include the following:

  • Standing beside a rope-covered winch, Lara can shoot other nearby rope attachment points to link the two objects together. Used in conjunction with Lara’s pickaxe, Lara is able to move/turn the mechanism and manipulate objects in the environment.
  • Standing beside a rope-covered pillar, Lara can shoot other nearby rope attachment points to link the two objects together. The linked up rope can then be jumped up to and climbed along, allowing access to otherwise inaccessible areas.
  • In certain areas, Lara is able to hit suspended pillars with rope covering their lower half to swing to distant platforms.
  • Blockages to cave entrances or doorways covered by rope can be removed using the Rope Arrows.

Combat Knife – The Combat Knife can be used to cut pieces of rope in the environment. These include supports for elevators, suspended objects for challenges such as rabbits, bells and flags.

Wire Spool – The Wire Spool has a number of uses and once acquired you’ll be able to use it to improve Lara’s ability to explore. It can be used to do the following:

  • The Wire Spool can transform Lara’s pick axe into a grapple axe. This can be used by jumping and attaching to horizontal supports with hooks allowing Lara to swing across gaps between platforms.
  • The Wire Spool’s grapple axe ability can also be used to jump and attach to high up ledges. Once attached, Lara can climb the rope to reach the ledge.

Rebreather – Once acquired around 2/3 of the way through the game, the Rebreather will allow Lara to stay underwater indefinitely without having to surface for air.

Rise

Broadhead Arrows – Broadhead Arrows are used outside of combat and can be used to help Lara access some hard to reach locations. They are used in the following ways:

  • Broadhead Arrows can be shot into sections of weak wood. Lara can then jump to these and climb up onto them to use them as a temporary platform. Multiple Broadhead Arrows are often required when climbing larger sections of weakened wooden panelling.

Survival Instincts

Lara’s Survival Instinct is a vision mode that you should be using extensively throughout the game. Similar to the special ‘Detective Mode' in the Batman: Arkham games, ‘Eagle Vision’ in Assassin’s Creed or Geralt’s ‘Witcher Sense’ in the Witcher III: Wild Hunt, Survival Instinct will highlight objects and areas of interest in the environment.

Objects of interest will be highlighted in gold and In general the following are observable with Lara’s Survival Instincts active:

  • Objective markers and waypoint markers.
  • Enemies and Animals.
  • Platforming elements in the environment such as scalable walls, tree branches, swing beams etc.
  • Plants, Mushrooms and other lootable reagent holding objects.
  • Quivers of arrows and boxes of ammunition.
  • Collectibles including: Strongboxes, Documents, Relics and Murals.

Gaining XP and Levelling Up

Rise of the Tomb Raider, similar to Tomb Raider (2013) incorporates a levelling system into the gameplay. As players perform various actions in-game, they can earn and gather experience (XP) over time. Upon accumulating sufficient XP, Lara will earn herself a Skill Point. These Skill Points can then be invested in one of three Skill Trees to unlock enhanced abilities, alternate attack types, stat boosts and some general bonuses.

In Rise of the Tomb Raider you'll gain XP via the following:

  • Completing campaign objectives.
  • Completing side-missions.
  • Killing enemies, either through combat or via stealth kills.
  • Killing animals.
  • An XP bonus is awarded for completing most combat encounters without being detected.
  • With Skill Points invested in certain Skills, Lara will earn bonus XP for performing various actions. These include:
    • Bonus XP for performing a dodge-counter kill. ‘Duellist Reflexes’ in the Brawler Skill Tree.
    • Bonus XP for chaining together head shots and silent takedowns. ‘Finesse’ in the Hunter Skill Tree.
    • Bonus XP for subduing enemies with crafted items. ‘Resourceful Combatant’ In the Survivor Skill Tree.
    • Bonus XP for picking up Collectibles and Challenges. ‘Avid Learner’ in the ‘Survivor’ Skill Tree.

Levelling your character means acquiring Skill Points and spending them. Spending Skill Points is important because the can offer a range of bonuses and improvements to Lara’s abilities, health and XP income which can drastically decrease the difficulty level of the game (which is a godsend on Survivor difficulty).
